Once a pipeline is buried, finding a defect means digging it up again, often after the crews and equipment have moved on. Pipeline quality therefore depends on catching problems at each stage, while the work is still exposed and the people who did it are still nearby. Quality controls for industrial pipeline installation follow the line from pipe delivery to final testing.
Why pipeline quality control is different
Pipeline work is long, repetitive and spread over distance. A small defect repeated over many joints becomes a large problem. Records must link every pipe joint, weld and test to a location on the route. And access for repairs becomes much harder once the line is in the ground.
Who carries out pipeline QC
The contractor’s QC team inspects its own work along the spread, while the owner’s inspectors witness key points and audit records. Both have to keep pace with crews that move every day.
Quality checks by stage
| Stage | Key checks |
|---|---|
| Material receiving | Pipe dimensions, coating condition, mill certificates and heat numbers |
| Stringing and handling | No coating damage, dents or bevel damage from handling |
| Field bending | Bend angle, ovality and absence of wrinkles or buckling |
| Line-up and welding | Approved procedure, qualified welder, fit-up, preheat where required, visual inspection |
| NDT | Radiography or automated ultrasonic testing to the specified extent and acceptance criteria |
| Field joint coating | Surface preparation, coating thickness, adhesion and curing |
| Pre-lowering inspection | Holiday detection of the full coating to find pinholes and damage |
| Lowering-in and backfill | Clearance, padding, no coating damage during lowering |
| Depth of cover | Cover measured and recorded against specification |
| As-built survey | Pipe position, welds and features recorded |
| Hydrotest | Test pressure, hold period, temperature effects and records |
| Cathodic protection | Test points installed and initial readings recorded |
Welding quality
Welding quality starts with qualified procedures and welders, commonly under API 1104 or a project specification, and continues through visual inspection, NDT and repair control. Monitoring repair rates by welder and crew shows where problems are developing. The inspection stages are described in welding inspection from fit-up to final acceptance, and NDT methods in when NDT is used in fabrication and pipeline work.
Coating quality
Coating protects the pipe from corrosion for decades. Factory coating can be damaged in transport and handling, and field joints are coated in difficult conditions. Holiday detection, which uses an electrical test to find coating defects, is the key check before lowering-in. Every holiday found must be repaired and retested.
The pipe tally and weld records
A pipe tally, or pipe book, links each pipe joint number and heat number to its position on the route, together with the weld numbers, welders, NDT results and repairs for each joint. It makes the line traceable and is essential for the final handover. Missing or inconsistent tally records are one of the most common problems found at completion.
Inspection staffing for a moving spread
Inspectors have to keep up with crews spread over many kilometers. Plan inspection coverage per crew rather than per project, with welding, coating and NDT inspectors assigned to specific parts of the spread and vehicles to move between them. When inspection falls behind, the instinct is to let crews continue and catch up later, which is exactly how defects end up buried.
Common pipeline QC failures
- Coating damage from handling that is not inspected or repaired
- Field bends with ovality or wrinkles beyond limits
- NDT lagging so far behind welding that defects repeat across many joints
- Depth of cover not recorded where the trench was shallow
- Pipe tally entries written up from memory after the shift
Where pipeline QC fits
The checks follow the construction sequence set out in pipeline construction from survey to commissioning. The principles of shop quality control, such as material traceability and release discipline, are similar to those in fabrication quality controls that prevent field delays. Wider QA/QC services are described in QA/QC services for industrial construction projects.
Apex Core Engineering supplies welding inspectors, coating inspectors and QA/QC personnel for pipeline work, operating within the management systems listed on its certifications page.
Frequently asked questions
What is holiday detection?
An electrical test that finds pinholes and other defects in pipeline coating, carried out before the pipe is lowered into the trench.
What is a pipe tally?
A record that links each pipe joint and heat number to its location on the route, with its welds, welders, inspection results and repairs.
Why should NDT keep pace with welding?
So defects are found quickly and their causes corrected before they are repeated on many more joints.
